Fans were initially disappointed that Mai Shiranui wouldn't have her Classic Costume in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. It felt like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate all over again when Masahiro Sakurai commented on why Mai was absent as a background cameo from Terry Bogard's home stage in that game.

"Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is for good boys and girls of many different ages, so we decided not to feature her. Please forgive us," said Sakurai back then.
